Gentamycin is an antibiotic extracted from the fermentation liquid of micromonospora purpurea. It is usually used in the form of a stable salt-gentamycin Sulphate.
Gentamycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic strongly effective against Gram-negative, Bacillus pyocyaneus, proteus, etc.
Intramuscular injection of Gentamycin Sulphate results in peak serum level about 30 minutes after administration. Detectable serum level persists for 8-12 hours. Rate of excretion through urine is about 78-81% in hours.
Gentamycin Sulphate is chiefly indicated in acute and chronic infections caused by bacilluscoli, Bacillus pyocyaneus and Staphylococcus aureus. It is also useful in severe burns, wounds, infections in urinary tract, digestive system, respiratory tract and septicaemia.
Usual dose for i.m. injections.
Adults: 80mg each time. 2-3 times daily, at intervals of 8 hours.
Children: 3-5mg/kg body weight daily, in two or three equally divided doses.
In severe systematic infections caused by strong toxic pathogens, the dosage may be increased adequately for i.m. Injection or i.v. infusion.
Administration of Gentamycin Sulphate may lead to anorexia, nausea, vomiting, auditory, renal and hepatic functional disturbances. Hence it should be used with great caution in patients with serious kidney and liver impairment. It is not recommended for the newborn and women during pregnancy.
