INTRODUCTION

Amoxycillin is a semi-synthetic Penicillin, an Aminopenicillin and analogue of Ampicillin. Chemically, it is D-(-) a-p-hydroxyl-benzyl penicillin trihydrate. It kills bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of the bacteria cell-wall. It is effective against non-pencillinase producing gram-negative organisms including salmonelis and shegella species etc.

Cikamox is broad-spectrum semi synthetic acid stable penicillin that is similar in bacterial activity to ampicillin. It is effective against non-penicillinase producing gram-negative Organisms including Salmonelia and Shigella species Haemophilus infiuenzae, Proteus species, Neisseria species, Escherichia coli and other susceptible gram-positive Organisms like Streptococcus species.

 

ABSORPTION AND EXCRETION

After the oral administration of Cikamox. 75-90% is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). It is stable in the gastric acid and may be given with or without food, it has a half-life of about 1 hour Protein-binding is about 20%. 20-30% is metabolized by hydrolysis and is excreted in the urine, while 60% is excreted unchanged.

 

INDICATIONS

– Respiratory Tract infections (upper and Lower)

– Billary Tract infections

– Bone and joints infections

– Otitis Media (acute and chronic especially effective in children)

– Gastro-enteric fever (Typhoid and Paratyphoid fever)

– Urinary Tract infections

 

SIDE EFFECT

Cikamox is generally well tolerated. Side effects that occur are usually mild and may include diarrhoea hypersensitivity reaction similar to those induced by ampicillin, including rashes and fever.

 

DOSAGE AND ADMNISTRATION

CHILDREN

Up to 10 years, 125mg (1 teaspoonful) every 8 hours and should be doubled in severe infections.

 

ADULTS

Standard:  250mg every 8 hours and should be doubled in severe infections

High dosage therapy: For severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, 3g every 12 hours.

Short Course therapy: For simple acute urinary tract infections two doses with 8 hours between the doses. Gonorrhoea Sing 3g dose.

 

PREPARATION OF THE SUSPENSION

To make 100ml the suspension, add 72.5ml of boiled and cooled water, invert and shake the bottle until all powder is dispersed. Alternatively, gradually add boiled and cooled water to half of the bottle, shake well and slowly add more up to the mark on the label.

SHAKE WELL BEFORE TAKING EACH DOSE

 

STORAGE

The dry powder should be stored below 25oC. The suspension should be used within 7 days of preparation and stored in a cool place preferably in a Refrigerator.

 

CONTRA-INDICATION

Cikamox is contra-indicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug

 

PRECAUTIONS

– Care should be taken in administering the drug to patients with liver disease or hepatic impairment

– The safety of the drug has not been established in pregnant and lactating mothers.

SUSPENSION

125mg/5ml of the dry powder to be reconstituted in 100ml bottles.

 

CAPSULES

500mg, 250mg amoxycillin B.P.
