Erythromycin Stearate

Each film coated tablet contains erythromycin stearate equivalent to 250mg or 500mg erythromycin.

 

Uses

Erythromycin is a macrolide antimicrobial drug. It has a similar spectrum to penicillin. It is used as an alternative to penicillin in hypersensitive patients; treatment of respiratory infections, whooping cough, legionaires’ disease, and Campylobacter enteritis. It is active against many penicillin-resistant staphylococci and also against Chlamydia and mycoplasmas.

 

Dosage

Children up to 2 years: 125mg every 6 hours, doses doubled for severe infections.

Children 2 – 8 years:250mg every 6 hours, doses doubled for severe infections

Adults and children over 8 years: 250-500mg every 6 hours or 500-1000mg every 12 hours, up to 4g in severe infections.

Early syphilis: 500mg 4 times daily for 14 days

Uncomplicated genital Chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 500mg 2 times daily for 14 days

 

Pregnancy and breast feeding

Erythromycin is not known to be harmful when used during pregnancy, it can be used for early syphilis in pregnant women allergic to penicillin. Only small amounts are excreted in breast milk.

 

Contra-indications and warnings

Erythromycin is excreted principally by the liver, so caution should be exercised in administering the antibiotic to patients with impaired hepatic function or concomiyantly receiving potentially hepatotoxic agents.

The administration of erythromycin has been frequently associated with the occurrence of reversible cholestatic jaundice.

Concomitant use of erythromycin with either astemizole or terfenadine is therefore contraindicated.

 

Side effects

Erythromycin is generally well tolerated, however side effects such as nausea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting and diarrhea are common.

Symptoms of hepatitis, hepatic dysfunction and/or abnormal liver function test results may occur.

 

Overdose

Symptoms: hearing loss, severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Treatment: gastric lavage, general supportive measures.

 

Storage

Store in a dry place below 30oC, protected from light.
