FERRODAN CAPSULES

FERROUS FUMARATE CAPSULES B.P. 300 mg.

 

Composition

Each capsule contains:

Ferrous Fumarate B.P. 300 mg

Equivalent to Ferrous Iron 97.5 mg

 

Actions

Ferrous Fumarate is used as an oral source of elemental iron. It contains about 33% elemental iron.

 

Indications

Ferrodan is indicated as prophylaxis in pregnancy and as treatment of iron deficiency anaemia.

 

Dosage

Ferrous fumarate is given by mouth in doses of 300 to 600 mg daily. Doses of up to 1.2 gm daily may be used. If necessary i.e. 1 to 2 capsules daily.

 

Side Effects

Ferrous fumarate is generally well tolerated. Side effects include upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, metallic taste, heartburn and either constipation or diarrhoea. Although abdominal symptoms are well known to be associated with ingestion of iron preparations, intolerance is chiefly a function of the concentration of soluble iron released in the intestinal lumen. Large doses of iron is associated with blackening with blackening of the stools.

 

Contraindication

Ferrous fumarate is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to iron preparations.
