Piloxicam Brand of Piroxicam Capsule

PILOXICAM

BRAND OF PIROXICAM

COMPOSITION

Each capsule of PILOXICAM contains 20mg of Piroxicam.

PROPERTIES

PILOXICAM is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class and a non-selective COX inhibitor possessing both analgesic and antipyretic properties. It undergoes enterohepatic circulation.

MODE OF ACTION

PILOXICAM works by reducing the levels of prostaglandins in the body. It blocks cyclooxygenase which is the enzyme that produces prostaglandins. This results in lower concentrations of prostaglandins. As a consequence, inflammation, pain and fever are reduced.

INDICATIONS

PILOXICAM is effective in treating fever, pain and inflammation in the body. It is also used in veterinary medicine to treat certain neoplasias expressing cyclooxygenase receptors, such as bladder, colon and prostate cancers.

As a group, NSAIDs are non-narcotic relievers of mild to moderate pain of many causes; including injury, menstrual cramps and primary dysmenorrhoea, rheumatoid and osteo-arthritis, arthrosis, degenerative joint disease, ankylosing spondylitis, tendinitis, sprains, back pain, acute gout, post-operative paint post-traumatic pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. They act as analgesics, especially where there is an inflammatory component.

STANDARD DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Always take PILOXICAM exactly as your doctor has told you to. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Do not take more than the recommended dose. If symptoms persist for more than 3 days, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dose is 20mg once daily or 10mg twice daily. It should be taken with food.

Local treatment of overdose includes emptying of the stomach by induced vomiting or gastric lavage. Careful monitoring and supportive treatment, monitoring of renal function, and maintaining adequate hydration is recommended.

SIDE EFFECTS

The most severe adverse reactions are peptic ulceration, gastrointestinal bleeding, and severe skin reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
